Class notes for matt

Consumer Choice - Consumer choice is essentially the range of products on offer at any time. For example if you wanted the box set of a TV show on VHS instead of DVD you should have that option.

Taste & Decency - This is basically being considerate with what you include in your TV show, people sat eating there dinner dont particularly want to watch somebody swear, kill or have sex with their fish and chips. Also it is a framework that prevents the encouragement or glamorization of unsavory things such as crime, indecent behavior and other such acts that could easily spill over in to everyday life.

Freedom of Information - The Freedom of Information Act gives you the right to ask any public organization for all the information they have on any subject you choose. Unless there’s a good reason, the organisation must provide the information within 20 working days. You can also ask for all the personal information they hold on you.

Censorship - Is the practice of censoring media such as tv, film, radio and publications is the aim of protecting the audience from unacceptable parts. The level of censorship depends on the stringency of the governments. Depending on the political climate of the country the media is being distributed in. For example Nazi Germany was alot more protective of what the population saw than perhaps Capitalist America during the same period.

Media Job Position Description

Writer - A writer is someone who is heavily involved in the creation of fictional and non-fictional work. This covers a number of types of media and varied forms including poetry, theatre, screen and radio (such as comedy/soap opera scripts, drama productions and documentaries). Writers may also create the content for websites or write articles for magazines or newspapers.
Generally speaking writers work free lance or you could be so lucky to get a permanent spot at a publication or TV.

Commissioning Editor - Commissioning editors are essentially the person that decides the content for magazines and book publishing companies. They commission work by finding journalists or responding to book proposals. They are also in control of making sure articles are submitted on time and without grammatical error.

They oversee the project from conception to completion and will sometimes be involved in the marketing or distribution of the film Producers work closely with directors and other production staff on the shoot. It is becoming more regular that they need to have directing skills themselves as the producer may also be the director and may take care of all project operations. Producers arrange funding for each project and are responsible for keeping the production within the allocated budget.http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/executive-producer1.htm

Script Editor - Because most films are not directed by their scriptwriters, the writer and the director may have different views of the story this link is aided by the script editor. Overall, the director and producer dictate the way the film will be shot, so the writer's original vision must be changed to the vision of those in charge, just like everything else in life. This may mean cutting or combining characters, adding or removing subplots or re-doing scenes for practical reasons such as an to small of a budget to properly reproduce parts of the writer's story. In television, shows that use more than one freelance writer for different episodes require someone with a knowledge of the overall storyline to ensure each episode fits well with the surrounding stories and things dont begin to cross over or move to a nonsensical path.https://careers.bbc.co.uk/fe/tpl_bbc01.asp?newms=jj&id=25369

Agents - Talent agents often receive a basic salary, as well as a commission, or percentage of an income their clients generate. Talent agents who are self-employed often work on only commission, so if the talent fails so does the agent essentially. Depending on the size of their industry and general success, talent agents can sometimes sit back and wait for entertainers to come to them, turning a lot of people away in the process. A talent agent must have an eye for what type of talent the industry needs, then work on selling clients to those who do the hiring, such as movie casting directors, record executives or television news directors.http://www.mymajors.com/careers-and-jobs/Talent-Agent

Unit 3 - Quantitative and Qualitative research

Qualitative research is essentially information gathered from interviews and questionnaires, the difficulty with this style of research is the unreliability of it. Because it isnt fully backed with hard facts its difficult to have a give a true representation with this style of research.
Quantitative research on the other hand is a more solid type of research. It is backed up with facts figures and statistics. You can be more definitive with this style of research and it is often the more reliable style, out of the two.

For example, in the documetary The Union they use different styles of research to present different types of information. Initially they begin opening with a spate of quantitative research. They present to the viewer a tirade of facts, stats and figures with in the opening 10 minutes of the film. This, i think, is to get the viewer on board initially with unarguable facts, it almost forces you to be more open to the rest of the ideas in the film but giving you information that simply cant be argued with, its factual.
Later on the film the research techniques begins to shift, as the film makers begin to expand on their angle they recruit the help of professionals, experts and entrepreneurs. While these people are held in high esteem within their respective fields the information that they are giving, while potentially factual is dispelled in the form of an opinion and presents qualitative data . This makes it harder to just accept, hence the reason for building credibility earlier in the film with the more factual side of it.
The film has a good mixes of the two styles and uses them to good effect. It gets the point across without the boredom of just a stat attack but personal opinions in the mix as well. I think as an ensemble it works extremely well.

Press pack Ideas

Social media presence:
The reason i chose to do a social media is because i feel that social media is a massively under utilized tool. It is a way of interacting with your audience and making them feel a part of the whole process. This can be a big selling point for a film.
I created an instagram page for the film Abduction that i am basing this campaign around (fortunately there was recently a film with Taylor Lautner also called Abduction, this was handy.) I posted an image of our podcast in order to raise the awareness from that side of the campaign. If people see that we have a podcast with an interview involving the lead actor in the movie, especially as it is free, most people will take five minutes to have a listen. This is exactly what we want them to do. So by overlapping the two campaigns they both end up being mutually beneficial.

Audio Podcast:

I recorded an audio podcast as the second part of my press pack, this went well. Considering I wanted to do be entirely improvised to give it an air of reality, not just a script read through. I think some of the bits of the podcast became a bit.....choice. But i think thats good because realistically thats what can actually happen in a live interview. You dont really know what either of the people are going to say. It can and does happen that the actor will start doing or saying inappropriate things, Tom Curise for example.
But im not ashamed of the podcast, i would happily submit it to anyone. I think it encaptures the audience and has a bit of spark that alot of marketing campaigns can end up lacking, thus turning into essentially a quite dull information sheet. I didnt want that from my campaign. If i was devising a professional marketing campaign i would want the audience to feel an affiliation with the film, with the actors. Just putting up a few posters and a high budget trailer isnt enough any more. There are cheaper more efficient ways of advertising. They just require a little more effort at the moment because there are not really any set rules for advertising. Im not trying to say that im some sort of christ-like-advertising-expert (although i may be) but i think that a lot of the people that are in charge of advertising campaigns for products follow a fairly set out group of guidelines that dont seem to have been molded to fit with the internet era were currently in.
